Inger Hanmann (née Frimann Clausen) grew up in a home where music and art played a significant role in everyday life. She showed an early interest and talent for drawing and, at her father's urging, went to Copenhagen to study at the Drawing and Art Industry School for Women between 1935 and 1938.
